Likewise, thirteen years ago, when I was with Sasaki, I led the design of the first ZNE laboratory building in the Northeast US at Bristol Community College, completed in 2016. Since then, such buildings have become commonplace. Of course, I wish I'd had a greater appreciation of embodied carbon, because there are a number of decisions that I would have made differently.

But, for buildings not heated and cooled by the sun, less heating and cooling - GreenBetween 13C-30C/55F-85F - should be the answer until the building is retrofitted/replaced to being heated and cooled by the sun. Of course, Super Hero status is awarded for GreenBetween

Good to hear how’s it’s going. And I agree on the water aspects: buildings shouldn’t try to be autonomous for water, but having collection tanks can have wider advantages. I’d still argue the same applies to energy.
