I love that there have been thoughtful studies and experts who put into words what I’ve been feeling for quite some time -- windows connect your home to the world around you. The view, the “information” received, the relation to what’s outside those walls. Really cool idea.

I am so glad you included the photo inside your hotel room Lloyd - typically if you pay more you get a “better view”. The same applies to homes. Those that pay more for a “better view” will also be using more UPFRONT CARBON...
Exterior shutters and shades are not common in Paris because...you guessed it, historical preservationists. Sometimes one gets the feeling that they care more about (the look of) buildings than the people who live in them.
If cave dwelling was *actually* the wonderful panacea that you're trying to paint it as being, then you could either move to Russia to live in practical-but-highly-depressing khrushchyovka or seek out a damp, dark, earth-moderated living condition underground. Everyone else can enjoy being in light up above ground, watching their kids play in the yard or gazing at the changing seasons through the windows of their modern homes.
