That quote from the real estate agent is obscene, really. I thought Canadians were better than that. Too many ghost bikes out there, though it is a lovely gesture.

I have been without a car for a little over a year now. I live in a small town surrounded by open land but I still do not feel safe biking because motor vehicle drivers are often just blind to pedestrians and bicyclists. To bike in a big city like Toronto takes dedication and courage.

Hmm, when I saw this, I immediately thought of this post lamenting all the big bad diesels killing people (even back in 2013):

Electric Cars Twice As Likely To Hit Pedestrians, According to New Study

...A study has found that pedestrians are twice as likely to be hit by electric or hybrid vehicles compared to those powered by petrol or diesel. The research, which was published on May 21, 2024, in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, examined casualty rates in Great Britain from 2013 to 2017.

...Most collisions occurred in urban areas, a greater proportion of which involved electric or hybrid vehicles than petrol/diesel vehicles: 94% vs 88%. This compares with 6% and 12%, respectively, in rural areas. Based on these data, the researchers calculate that between 2013 and 2017, the average annual casualty rates of pedestrians per 100 million miles of road travel were 5.16 for electric and hybrid vehicles and 2.40 for petrol and diesel vehicles.

This indicates that collisions with pedestrians were, on average, twice as likely with electric and hybrid vehicles as they were with petrol and diesel vehicles, and 3 times as likely in urban areas than in rural areas, say the researchers. They acknowledge several caveats to their findings, including the lack of data beyond 2017 and the absence of vehicle coding in nearly a quarter of cases. And younger, less experienced drivers are more likely to be involved in a road traffic collision and are also more likely to own an electric car, possibly accounting for some of the observed heightened risk associated with these vehicles, they suggest.

Cyclists and big trucks just don't mix. In fact, cyclists and SUVs don't mix. Separated cycleways are the only safe option on busy roads and the only way we can encourage more people to swap bikes for cars. Side bars on trucks may well prevent the deaths of those already riding but safe,separated routes are what tip the balance towards more people choosing bikes.

Fingers crossed the Avenue Road Study heads to IEC on May 28 to put an end to this madness on Avenue Road. Agreed too many ghost bikes have been put up in this city.

Wouldn't it make sense to take a different route if the construction area is not "safe" for cyclists and pedestrians at this time?

The batch plant can be miles from the construction site so pedestrians and cyclists on any surface street on the truck's route between the two are exposed.

Yes but they are disconnected and in that particular area there are not great options north-south.
