You make a difference, which in the final analysis is about all we can hope for in life. Your thoughts create echoes that reverberate throughout the cybersphere, enriching us and inspiring us to all to make a difference, too.

There's a lot of this going around, mid or later career layoffs casting people into a void where equivalent roles suddenly no longer exist. So it's great to read about some encouraging outcomes. Making a reasonable living while doing something that feels meaningful -- or at least not utterly soul-sucking -- feels like such an outrageous idea these days, but I'm not giving up either.

"... it was not a year for Living the 1.5 Degree Lifestyle...."

Yes, you certainly are not providing leadership for "less flying to promptly minimize greenhouse gas emissions". Use your influence to support all those global activities vurtually, and to overall convert the global events from physical.to virtual.

I do know what it's like to lose a job. I was laid off too.

Unlock and luckily I was able to transition to a new career. I really miss tree hugger. I miss you guys being there. I miss the regular articles you wrote. I miss the fact that it's in the world

Glad to read this, Lloyd. I have always gotten a ton from your thoughts and writings, and I appreciate you.

I was laid off without warning and without any planning for my staff or projects the first of October last year, and am still searching for a new role. I am, honestly, struggling and not clear on next steps. It’s as if the industry as a whole has discarded me just as I have reached a level of experience, knowledge, and wisdom that is worthy!

I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you find that role soon!

This is lovely to hear, Lloyd ! And, so inspiring, as I and many others I know in climate-related work, are starting to really dig in on this platform. What I LOVE is the ringing "I did it my way" (a la Frank Sinatra) of both your and your former Treehugger colleague's stories. It may not have been overnight, but you found a way through consistency to build community, and now have a lovely group of readers who REALLY want to learn and be inspired by you. Is there anything better? Could a publication ever have let that take shape for an individual writer? Would you otherwise have delivered so much of our authentic self through it? No. Huge congrats. I aim to report back on a similar story for myself 2 years from now.

Great post, Lloyd. Thanks for including my update. It's been a wild two years for sure, but such a pleasure to attend your book launch last summer and see all the great things you're doing.

I am happy to hear about this content shift from upfront carbon to sufficiency. I think it might be an even more substantial part of the tap root than the upfront carbon. It's also a more complex, taboo and interesting challenge. Although I'm not optimistic about the prospects, I truly hope we can have some collective action on this as opposed to blindly marching into collapse...

This is a great reflection and update to read! Also a good reminder for the younger generations that important work takes a lifetime; overnight change/success is usually the product of decades of hard work (I read this once from someone who attained their goal of success).

As someone else mentioned in the comments (I'm paraphrasing), your words and thoughts travel far and make an impact, and it's important that you are aware of that. Thank you for the inspiration that you infuse into the world!

Wait! Enquiring minds want to know, did you by chance ask Katherine if she was still on the "No Poo Shampoo" regime?

I remember well the day you two got laid-off (or at least didn't appear) in Tree-Hugger anylonger.

That wass the day I quit visiting that website. A couple months later, I discovered, by accident, your blog and haven't looked back. Anyways, I am glad I'm here to help celebrate your second new life anniversary. And, I'm glad that you and Katherine are happy and have prospered in your new lives.

Hello! I am no longer on my no-shampoo regime, though I have become a big fan of these waste- and plastic-free shampoo bars: https://noticehairco.com.

Lloyd, you wrote: "...I am much more focused on sufficiency. I suspect that I will be writing more about my next project, my New Manual of the Dwelling." In 2011 Myron and David Wentz wrote a book, "The Healthy Home - Simple Truths to Protect Your Family From Hidden Household Dangers". I think you might find it interesting source material for your Manual of the Dwelling. It is available from Amazon (BTW, I didn't write the URL): https://www.amazon.ca/Healthy-Home-Protect-Household-Dangers/dp/1593156553/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&dib_tag=se&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.N5UIPgQLlMI97HtoqZkMxXwOwKI9X4KIsXvVZzrOdom7fosdfJMSHtKpS5TOTbAsd9baauKE2U9cNm4ZnSu1K20t9m92GZPKILI2p4PKeZDzZiIg6k0OLxzh-2ZrCSeADV6UUs5NBloYRSGfoVsJy9shk5-fRU9DPEg7ErmbBEKyGv5fck2N4C6_gCIumsCWbumej_5J82oc8X7lepej2lYh91bQsP4CwfrdsknmJp4.DGznBE0mdpULv-StfmxXsbxDdych1V948_mK565cj-M&qid=1738007217&sr=1-15
