It may not be worsened by aging boomers, but it's good to also mention impact insulation class (IIC) which is generally caused by footfall. From the data I've seen this is an area where mass timber (when it is left exposed as the finished ceiling) performs poorly vs light wood framing and drywall ceilings that are easily decoupled.

So with the volume turned up to 11 on their giant TVs, the Baby Boomers really are booming.

Over the past couple of months, we have been watching the construction of a new street that connects a major artery to our street (previously, it took two turns to get onto our street) but, fortunately, at a point several houses down from us. This morning - Glory Be! - we confirmed that they are turning the road in front of our house, which used to be heavily traveled, into a dead-end street. Yesterday, after they closed off that section, we sat in our living room with our door open and just listened to the quiet. It was sooo.... nice.

I have been bugging my husband about his need to get his hearing tested for some time. Now, armed with the information you’ve provided, I plan to insist that both of us get our hearing checked ASAP. I’ll also stop turning up my earbuds to full volume when I want to hear over some noisy task I’ve undertaken. Thanks for the nudge that I needed Lloyd.

Very interesting observations. Here in the USA they now sell hearing aids over the counter which I expect will increase the percentage of users (though I suspect some are dawdling as am I). Our greatest noise issues living in a renovated 1950s rambler are the noise from the mosquito foggers, leaf blowers, and lawn mowers from the yard maintenance workers employed by some of our neighbors.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere in the last couple of years that noise was the number one cause of litigation....
